Located about 15 minutes northeast of downtown Atlanta, North Druid Hills (also referred to by locals as Briarcliff) is an unincorporated area in Dekalb County with a population of just under 20,000 people, offering a quieter suburban alternative to the busier urban Atlanta lifestyle. Attractions in North Druid Hills primarily include shopping, dining and outdoor/recreational activities.

Toco Hills Shopping Center

Located in the heart of North Druid Hills, Toco Hills is situated at the busy intersection of LaVista Road and North Druid Hills Road, serving as the area’s primary shopping and dining destination. Shops include a Publix Supermarket, Office Depot, Tall Tales Book Shop and Pike Nurseries, among others. Dining options include fast food and midrange chains like Wendy’s,Steak & Shake, Outback Steakhouse and Chili’s, as well as upscale dining like Petite Auberge.

The vibe here is friendly and the location attractions offer more than an afternoon’s worth of enjoyment. Local businesses are inter-mixed with larger retail chains here.

Elwyn John Wildlife Sanctuary

Located just behind the old Briarcliff High School just off North Druid Hills Rd., Elwyn John Wildlife Sanctuary is a lovely wooded area encircled by a walking trail, and featuring vista points and picnic areas. A popular outdoor area for family outings, hiking and birding.

This park makes a wonderful afternoon hike with an emphasis on bird watching. Several different species of bird congregate here and the foliage offers a nice backdrop for sightseeing.

Mason Mil Park (http://www.dekalbcountyga.gov/parks/pr-mason-mill-park.html)

Located on McConnell Drive just off Clairmont Road, Mason Mill Park is the largest in the North Druid Hills area, offering sports fields, tennis courts, hiking trails, picnic areas and playgrounds. A great place for family outings or recreation.

Families will find the most enjoyment from Mason Mill as the facilities are mostly catered to children and families with children.

Nearby Attractions

In addition to these attractions, there are a few additional points of interest located within a few miles of the North Druid Hills area. These include:

North DeKalb Mall (http://www.northdekalbmall.com/). The oldest mall in the Atlanta metro, this complex features anchor stores like Macy’s, Ross and Marshall’s, as well as many specialty stores, AMC Theaters, and even a community garden. North DeKalb Mall is located about 3 miles east of North Druid Hills at the Lawrenceville Expressway.

DeKalb Farmer’s Market (http://www.dekalbfarmersmarket.com/). Located about 5 miles southeast of North Druid Hills, this is a large, privately owned, continuously operating farmer’s market featuring 140,000 square feet of fresh organic produce, seafood, meats, wine, cheese, dairy and much more.

Atlanta Botanical Garden (http://www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org/). One of Atlanta’s most popular attractions, the Atlanta Botanical Garden features acres or indoor and outdoor exhibits, seasonal plant life and numerous special events. Located about five miles southwest of North Druid Hills along Piedmont Avenue.

Piedmont Park (http://www.piedmontpark.org). Atlanta’s largest park, Midtown’s Piedmont Park features acres of open fields, sporting facilities, a large pond and more. Piedmont Park is located immediately beside the Atlanta Botanical Garden and is open and free year-round.

Other sights, including downtown Atlanta and its offerings, are just a stone’s throw away from North Druid Hills.
