Atlanta Honored As Nerdiest City

Today I came to vivid realization… I am a nerd.

I don’t know why I didn’t see the writing on the wall. I’m a grown man with massive collection of Legos. I own more video games than a twelve year old gaming addict. I love books. I love nerdy movies in which I have a huge collection. I believe in aliens. I still play with toys.

The first step to finding inner peace as a nerd is admitting you have a problem. After finally admitting to myself that I am indeed a nerd, it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I once feared the term “nerd,” now I’m beginning to embrace it.

So where else in the US are my fellow nerds found? Where are my people?

According to a recent publication from a real estate blog, nerds are congregating in Atlanta, GA.

Atlanta Honored As ‘Nerdiest’ City

The real estate blog, Movoto recently released their top ten nerdiest cities in the United States. With moderate surprise, Atlanta, GA came in at number one. I thought the number one honor would have gone to a Silicon Valley city like San Jose, CA,

While Atlanta is home to Georgia Tech University, a University composed of some 15,000 computing, engineering, and tech nerds; Atlanta’s also home to hundreds of annual fairs and conventions.

Reactions to Atlanta being named the nerdiest city in the country have been quite positive across Twitter and other social media sites.

The general consensus … Atlanta being named a nerdy city is a good thing. If ‘nerdy’ is bad, we don’t wanna be good.

How The Nerdiest Cities Are Calculated

The real estate professionals at Movoto looked at many factors when compiling their list, and crunched nearly as many numbers as ground control did to slingshot Apollo 13 around the dark side of the moon.

Some of the factors that came into play when determining the nerdiest city include: ratios of people to the number of comic book stores, book stores, science museums, gaming stores, book stores, and computer stores.

The number of Renaissance fairs, sci-fi conventions, and live action role-playing groups (LARP) were also a big determining factor when determining the nerdiest cities in the US.

Atlanta Ranked 21st On List of Top 50 US Cities for Bedbugs

The United States is currently at war against a frightening outbreak of repulsive blood sucking bedbugs. In a consumer report, reported by ABC News, Atlanta, GA now ranks 21st on a list of the top 50 bedbug infested cities in the United States—which really isn’t that bad considering Atlanta’s size. Cincinnati, Chicago, and Detroit round out the top three infested cities this year, according to the report.

Here is an informative graphic breaking down everything you need to know about the growing bedbug epidemic:

Bed Bug Infographic

There were nearly no bedbugs inside the U.S. between the end of World War II and the 1990s. Today the bedbug numbers are completely blowing up. I remember when I was a kid my mother would whisper to me as she tucked me in “sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite.” I never really knew what she meant because I had never seen a bedbug and didn’t know what they were. Today, CBS News reports that more than 250 million dollars a year is spent combating bedbugs.

As small as bed bugs are, their occurrence can hurt a city’s pride and image. Once bed bugs become ingrained in an area, the entire city is thinking about them. Anyone that has ever been bitten by these bugs, and end up breaking out with red welts all over their bodies, knows how very maddening they can be. The worst part is that they can be incredibly challenging to get rid of without the help of a pest control professional.

If you are seeing bedbugs in your home, call an Atlanta pest control professional today!

Don’t Let Bedbugs Ruin Your Vacation

bedbug (Cimex sp.)

The summer months have come to a close, and so have our summer vacations. Whether you vacationed in Disneyworld with the kids, or took your significant other up the coast to Myrtle Beach, the possibility of bringing home those malevolent bedbugs was always a concern… Or it should’ve been.

Bedbug infestations are growing at exponential rates—some reports say as much as 75% from the same time last year. The Bedbug Crisis Hotline has increased ten fold in the last 6 months.

Now that the summer vacation season has come and gone, and the kids are back in school, it’s time to start thinking about our holiday travel plans. Here are a few bedbug prevention tips to keep in mind while on vacation. Remember, the best way to prevent bedbugs is to be diligent before, during, and after your vacation.

Inspect Your Room

Inspecting for Bedbugs

The first and most important step upon entering your hotel room is looking it over thoroughly. Place your bags in the middle of the hard tile bathroom floor. Pull the sheets and covers back on your bed. Carefully inspect the bedding, the mattress seams, and behind the headboard for bedbugs. They will look like like a small, flat, reddish-brown seed. Remove couch and chair cushions and do the same inspection.

Change Rooms

If you suspect your hotel room has a bedbug infestation, request a different room as far away from the original as possible. Outbreaks will almost always spread to other rooms close by. You may even be safer changing hotels if at all possible.

Keep Everything Off The Floor

Even if you don’t see any bedbugs in your room, you should also take precautions. Never place your luggage on the hotel bed or floor. Make sure to use luggage racks. While in the airport, in the airplane, and in a taxi, keep your small bags and purses on your lap.

Wrap Your Luggage

While traveling, use suitcases with protective covers. If your suitcases don’t have a protective cover, you can wrap them in plastic bags.

Post Travel Luggage Treatment

When you get home from vacation, make sure you clean your luggage. A handheld steamer will work the best because it will instantly kill any bedbugs and their larvae. Wash and dry your clothes immediately upon your return. The heat from the dryer will kill any unwanted hitchhikers.

If you fear you have brought bedbugs into your home, call a pest control professional immediately!

Ants are Burning down the House!

No this isn’t a rock band or a fad song…

Per a fireman in Florida ants were the cause of house fire last week. The Florida home caught fire and caused 80,000 in damages and all because of one tiny little black ant. The ant colony was making their home in the wall near an electrical outlet. When one of the carpenter ants got grounded by the electrical current running through the wiring  it caught on fire and the fire quickly spread out of the outlet and into the family room.
