How To Deal With A Bed-Bug-Infested Mattress

We need to have a good night’s sleep. But this is almost impossible if your mattress is packed with bed bugs. No, you actually won’t feel uncomfortable right after getting bitten. But you’ll feel itchy a day or two after. If your mattress is ridden with the bugs, this means that the minute bloodsuckers will feast on your blood each night. So, you might not get any respite from the itch and overall discomfort until you take care of the problem.

Getting rid of bed bugs on or inside a mattress is more difficult than removing bed bugs from clothing. With clothing and bedding, for instance, you can put these in the laundry. Wash and then place in the dryer for 30 to 40 minutes with the heat at the highest possible setting. This will get rid of the live bugs and even the eggs. What about your mattress? Here are some tips that you can try out.

1. Vacuum. When you notice bugs crawling near or on your bed, one of the things that you can do is vacuum the entire area. The machine will suck up the tiny bugs, especially those that are crowded beneath or on the edges of your mattress. Dispose of the dust bag outdoors and seal it properly to keep the bugs from escaping.

2. Apply heat on the mattress. If you have a steam machine, use this to kill the bed bugs. Make sure that you steam the entire surface of the mattress, including the bottom part and the sides. If you don’t have a machine, you can call a reliable pest control company that specializes in bed bug heat elimination. They have the equipment to treat entire rooms or houses using steam, and the entire procedure only takes a day or even less. So, you won’t get too hassled and this won’t leave any toxic residues as well.

3. Seal the mattress in plastic. Be sure to wrap it nice and tight. Check if there are tiny holes that will allow air in because this will make the method ineffective as the bugs can readily survive with even the smallest amount of air. The affected mattress must be sealed for at least a year since bed bugs can survive without feeding for more than six months. So, you might need a new mattress while the old one is being treated. But before you go ahead and buy a new one, have a bed bug exterminator check your entire house. You wouldn’t want your latest mattress to become another bed bug haven, right?

4. Have your mattress treated by professionals. There are companies that specialize in treating bed-bug-laden mattresses. Ask the pest control company in your area if they perform these kinds of treatments. If not, see if they know of someone who does or go online for contact details.

5. It’s always better to hire the services of a dependable pest control team. Experts have the skills, know-how and the equipment to deal with your bed bug problems at home. Moreover, they can do a thorough cleaning, as well as carry out preventive measures, so that your house will stay bed-bug-free.

The United States is currently at war against a frightening outbreak of repulsive blood sucking bedbugs. In a consumer report, reported by ABC News, Atlanta, GA now ranks 21st on a list of the top 50 bedbug infested cities in the United States—which really isn’t that bad considering Atlanta’s size. Cincinnati, Chicago, and Detroit round out the top three infested cities this year, according to the report.

Here is an informative graphic breaking down everything you need to know about the growing bedbug epidemic:

There were nearly no bedbugs inside the U.S. between the end of World War II and the 1990s. Today the bedbug numbers are completely blowing up. I remember when I was a kid my mother would whisper to me as she tucked me in “sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite.” I never really knew what she meant because I had never seen a bedbug and didn’t know what they were. Today, CBS News reports that more than 250 million dollars a year is spent combating bedbugs.

As small as bed bugs are, their occurrence can hurt a city’s pride and image. Once bed bugs become ingrained in an area, the entire city is thinking about them. Anyone that has ever been bitten by these bugs, and end up breaking out with red welts all over their bodies, knows how very maddening they can be. The worst part is that they can be incredibly challenging to get rid of without the help of a pest control professional.

bedbug (Cimex sp.)

The summer months have come to a close, and so have our summer vacations. Whether you vacationed in Disneyworld with the kids, or took your significant other up the coast to Myrtle Beach, the possibility of bringing home those malevolent bedbugs was always a concern… Or it should’ve been.

Bedbug infestations are growing at exponential rates—some reports say as much as 75% from the same time last year. The Bedbug Crisis Hotline has increased ten fold in the last 6 months.

Now that the summer vacation season has come and gone, and the kids are back in school, it’s time to start thinking about our holiday travel plans. Here are a few bedbug prevention tips to keep in mind while on vacation. Remember, the best way to prevent bedbugs is to be diligent before, during, and after your vacation.

Inspect Your Room

Inspecting for Bedbugs

The first and most important step upon entering your hotel room is looking it over thoroughly. Place your bags in the middle of the hard tile bathroom floor. Pull the sheets and covers back on your bed. Carefully inspect the bedding, the mattress seams, and behind the headboard for bedbugs. They will look like like a small, flat, reddish-brown seed. Remove couch and chair cushions and do the same inspection.

Change Rooms

If you suspect your hotel room has a bedbug infestation, request a different room as far away from the original as possible. Outbreaks will almost always spread to other rooms close by. You may even be safer changing hotels if at all possible.

Keep Everything Off The Floor

Even if you don’t see any bedbugs in your room, you should also take precautions. Never place your luggage on the hotel bed or floor. Make sure to use luggage racks. While in the airport, in the airplane, and in a taxi, keep your small bags and purses on your lap.

Wrap Your Luggage

While traveling, use suitcases with protective covers. If your suitcases don’t have a protective cover, you can wrap them in plastic bags.

Post Travel Luggage Treatment

When you get home from vacation, make sure you clean your luggage. A handheld steamer will work the best because it will instantly kill any bedbugs and their larvae. Wash and dry your clothes immediately upon your return. The heat from the dryer will kill any unwanted hitchhikers.

If you fear you have brought bedbugs into your home, call a pest control professional immediately!
